One of the best manatee photos ever.

Head to Calming Manatee for random uplifting messages and photos of manatees being all cute and blobby (that is, how manatees always look).

This photo may not look like much at first, but the caption tells all (perhaps in more detail than you need):

A manatee cow enjoys the attention of aroused males who throw their blubber around to win her favor.

Ah, manatees in love. See more photos at jacksonville.com.

Happy almost 63rd birthday, Snooty (the world’s oldest manatee on record, born July 21, 1948)! Snooty’s birthday was celebrated yesterday at the South Florida Museum and Parker Aquarium, festivities of which included a birthday “cake” made of cabbage heads, pineapple juice, carrots, and strawberries. Read more about the celebration at Brandenton.com.

Manatee mating season = manatee herds near the shoreline. This herd of 13 manatees was spotted in Holmes Beach, Florida, where police had to be called to guard the manatees from curious humans. (Manatees are endangered species; don’t touch or bother ‘em!)

Sorry it’s been so long since my last post. I return with this damn cute photo of a fuzzy manatee chomping on a head of lettuce. [Photograph: untitledcodex. ♔ on Flickr]
(As for the manatee fuzz, you can read more about manatees’ tactile hair at this article at savethemanatee.org, How Manatees Find Their Way.)

This looks like quite the manatee traffic jam.

Seriously though, according to this article from Tampa Bay Online, November 15 to March 31 is “BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS OF MANATEES!” time if you’re a boater in Tampa since this is when manatees “head to shallow water in search of warmth for the winter.” Manatees are endangered! Don’t run into them!
